Abstract/Notes The light-harvesting complex is a biological device in the photosynthesis reaction that acts as a highly efficient energy captures and transfers unit. Knowledge in the molecular structure of light-harvesting complex is essential to understand molecular mechanisms involved during interaction with light. In the photosynthetic purple bacteria, unfortunately, high• resolution crystal structures are available only for one type of B870 core LH (Rps. palustris) and very few types of peripheral LH2 (two B800-850 complexes from Rps. acidophila 10050 and Phs. molischianum, and one B800-820 from Rps. acidophila 7050). Here, we present preliminary investigations on LH2 that show unusual characteristic of having multiple types of polypeptide pairs. In the application for designing artificial devices, LH2 provides well-organized pigments assemblies fixed by a protein scaffold and gives excellent biological and biochemical functions. Unfortunately, LH2 is rather unstable under exposure of high intensity of light and absorbs light energy with high selectivity over the spectral range.
