Abstract/Notes Color in birds can be achieved in many different ways. One of the widest spread coloration of plumage among birds is a carotenoid-based pigmentation, This determining red, orange and yellow color pigment cannot be synthesized by birds, and it can be obtained from the carotenoid- rich diet only. Certainly, carotenoids can be structurally modified in biochemical processes once digested, which may lead to color manipulation displayed in plumage. Data collected from many different researches show that birds usually collect lutein, canthaxanthin, zeaxantain, astaxanthin and rhodoxanthin. Carotenoid pigment compound in birds have a wide range of functions. In biochemical part it gives health benefits as pro• vitamin A the activity of which may protect cells and tissues from the damaging effects of free radicals. It also may act as immuno-stimulants and increase bird's parasite resistance. Physical role is also played by the presence of those pigments. Some investigations reported those carotenoids as being responsible for over-winter survival and better fitness. Moreover carotenoid based color and brightness of plumage is an evidence of overall individual condition. There are many ecological functions of carotenoids among Aves class. Among others it supports males in achieving mating success by acquiring colourful patterns. It also works for females as a tool in estimating potential partner quality (both male's overall condition as well as its abilities in nest defending)
